Growing coral – LEDs to the rescue

Growing coral in a tank is not typically easy but LEDs make it possible. LED lights are able to provide sufficient light levels without overheating surrounding water1. The Philips CoralCare LED luminaire has even been shown to be able to grow coral with the same vivid colours as coral grown naturally in the sea unlike conventional aquarium lighting that produces a more subdued colour2.

LED lights have been used as a treatment for babies with jaundice

Severe jaundice in babies can lead to brain damage and death, but using phototherapy (light treatment) breaks down bilirubin, the toxic chemical that builds up in the blood during jaundice3. The light waves are absorbed into the skin and blood and convert the bilirubin into a product that can then pass through their system3. This treatment is particularly important for babies who may not be appropriate for a blood transfusion3.

LEDs Run Brighter and More Efficiently the Colder it Gets

Compact fluorescence are known to operate poorly in colder climates and energy efficiency for other types of lighting also drops coinciding with temperature decreases4. LEDs and their accompanying fixtures are designed to run at nominal temperatures, when exterior temperature drops the cooling of the LEDs becomes ultra efficient resulting in increased brightness4.

Bugs aren’t attracted to LED lights?

It’s not necessarily the type of light bulb, but instead the colour spectrum that is emitted by the lamp5. If you change your LEDs lights to a warm colour (futher away from the blue spectrum) less bugs will bew attracted to the lights as insects are drawn to blue spectrum light sources5. LED lights with a colour spectrum of 3200k or higher (cool white) will attract insects5.

LEDs & Benefits in the Classroom

Recent studies have found that LED lighting not only improves student’s concentration and behaviour in the classroom, but it also significantly improves their test scores. A series of standardised tests was given to students before and after new LED lighting systems were installed. The results? Students scored 25% better. 1

LEDs & Autism

Research has also shown that LED lighting helps prevent students with autism from suffering the headaches, eyestrain and nausea that can be caused by the sub-visible flicker of direct fluorescent lighting. 2

LEDs extending beef shelf life & saving millions

According to research at Kansas State University, using LED lights in refrigeration units extends the shelf life of many beef products. LEDs lead to a slower discoloration process in meat, and since consumers discriminate against meat that’s discolored, much of that meat has to be discounted or thrown away. Switching from fluorescent lighting to LEDs could save the meat industry and grocery stores millions of dollars each year! 3

White LEDs suppresses Melatonin production

The University of Hafia has found that exposure to the short wavelengths of 'white' LED lights suppresses the bodies production of Melatonin more than bulbs emitting a yellow-orange light which may impact on Melatonin's regulation of the internal body clock. 4

LED Holiday lights could save billions

Traditional incandescent lights for a 6ft Christmas tree are estimated to cost $10USD for 12hours of lighting compared to just $0.27USD if these were LEDs 5. It has been estimated if 50% of the incandescent in the US were replaced with LEDs it could save around $17.2 billion USD! 6
